When it is hot, dinner needs to be faster and lighter without turning into a snack plate that leaves you hungry an hour later. Start with a protein you can cook quickly or buy already cooked, then use cold crunch, acid, and a strong sauce to make it feel like a real dinner.
Make the protein actually carry dinner
Summer meals work when the protein is visible, not hidden in a side dish. Aim for a substantial main protein, a filling base such as rice, noodles, potatoes, or toast, and one cold vegetable with crunch. A limey yogurt sauce, sesame-soy dressing, or ginger-scallion oil makes simple groceries feel intentional.
When the plan falls apart
Keep a no-cook dinner in reserve. Tuna, eggs, Greek yogurt, frozen edamame, microwave rice, and something crunchy are enough to replace a delivery order without pretending every night has to be a perfect meal-prep night.
